Each room has true floor-to-ceiling windows for an airy feel and everything in the space has purpose. The functionality more than makes up for it. The rooms, modelled after that found on a cruise ship, are smaller than a typical North American hotel room (the largest of the two new properties maxes out at about 225 square feet). The Jolene Sound Room is the Moxy Williamsburg’s nightclub, featuring a custom sound system. The properties are accurately described as unconventional, playful and approachable. Engaging artwork made of 50,000 crayons welcomes guests at check-in. Tiny circus-performer figurines dangle from the chandeliers over a shuffleboard table, part of the hotel’s interior design theme paying homage to the neighbourhood’s well-known ‘pleasure gardens’ of yesteryear.Īcross the East River at 216-room Moxy Williamsburg (opened in March 2023), you’ll find a seriously cool lobby bar fashioned similar to the automat vending-machine style restaurants popularized in New York in the 1920s. The only slice of the Big Apple I cared about was right here, in this neighbourhood, surrounded by local people doing local things. I’ve had the opportunity to stay at a variety of hotels over the years and can honestly say the Moxy experience was right up there among my favourite, thanks to the properties’ perfect balance between function and fun.
